The European Studies Programme and the School of Modern Languages and Cultures are pleased to host US Army Sergeant Rick Carrier (ret.) to give his eyewitness testimony of his experiences in Europe during World War II and the shocking reality of the Holocaust.

Rick Carrier, then only 20 years old, was an assault reconnaissance combat engineer attached to General Patton’s Third Army during World War II, taking part in numerous battles on and after D-day in 1944. He was following the advancing American infantry in the German city of Weimar, tasked with finding and securing engineering equipment left behind by Nazi troops. On April 10, 1945, while on a reconnaissance mission, Carrier discovered the infamous Buchenwald concentration camp, where over 230,000 prisoners were brought between 1938 and 1945. Buchenwald was liberated the next day by the US Third Army.

Guest lecture by Rick Carrier January 27 is the UN International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which this year commemorates the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz Concentration Camp.
